This coffee comes from one of the most remarkable cooperatives in East Africa. The Dukunde Kawa Cooperative operates the Musasa mill in the Gakenke district of Rwanda — a region so close to a natural gorilla habitat that the landscape itself feels wild and untouched. Farm plots here are so small they're measured not in hectares, but by the number of trees each family owns. More than 80% of the cooperative's workforce is women, and producer earnings have funded healthcare access, livestock investment, and environmental protection programs. Buying this coffee is a direct investment in those communities.
The coffee itself is outstanding — certified organic, grown at 1,500–2,100 masl, and processed using a traditional washed method. The cup has a vibrant, clean acidity reminiscent of a fine Kenyan, with a chocolaty base, herbal sweetness, and a fascinating evolution as it cools: initial brightness gives way to fresh apple and brown sugar. Light roasts maximize the citrus and floral brightness; medium roasts find perfect balance between acidity and chocolate; dark roasts build body and bring out baker's chocolate and dark caramel.
Tasting notes: Bright acidity · Chocolate · Fresh apple · Brown sugar · Herbal sweetness
